Comic-Con 2006: Transformer Voice Cast Buzz
Will Peter Cullen be the voice of Prime?
by Chris Carle
July 21, 2006 - This year's Comic-Con is the last where Transformers movie news can possibly be revealed, as the film releases next year on July 4th. As such, plenty of aspects of the film are being hinted at while the main, big secrets of the film remain under lock and key. At today's Hasbro Transformers toy panel, the toy company debuted the new 20th Century edition DVD box, and talked briefly about the upcoming live action Michael Bay film based on their toys.
Toy Designer Aaron Archer, who has been working closely with members of Bay's production team, stated the film "has a lot of heart; very cool," and told fans that the changes being made to the core Transformers are "nothing to worry about." He went on to say that the characters are not complete departures. "I think they're new interpretations," he stated.
Perhaps the most interesting tidbit gleaned from the panel is the fact that Peter Cullen is seriously being considered by the filmmakers for the voice of Optimus Prime. Cullen played the voice of Prime, and several other Transformers, in both the animated series and Transformers: The Movie. Fan support for Cullen as Prime has blossomed on Internet message boards, and according to members of the panel, Michael Bay and company are looking into using Cullen as a result.
Archer went on to state that "the movie stands alone at this point," and probably will not weave into the various storylines of toys and future television series. Stay tuned to IGN's Comic-Con coverage of this film, as more details are sure to be unveiled as the weekend continues.
